Kaolin Lake

The sun almost reached the top of the sky when we stepped out of the bus and were welcomed by a few turquoise lakes. Kaolin Lake is an area rich of minerals such as, you guessed it, kaolin, in which miners dug the sand to excavate the precious materials. Long deemed precious due to its various usage applications such as the basic foundation of cement, kaolin production ceased when the resources exhausted. The holes in the ground left by the miners were then filled with rain water and slowly transformed themselves to become a mineral lake.

Despite its scenic beauty, I wonder whether the people of Belitung Island, Indonesia, would benefit much from the tourist attraction and whether environmental problems would eventually cost them dearly in the future.
